My New Cat: From Litter Boxes To Love
Posted by Guest Author in Home
One of the great things about felines is that they seem so self-sufficient. But when my new cat needs something, he is no less vulnerable than a dog or any other pet. Looking after him can take a lot of patience and attention.
As for attention, that depends on personality. He might like a brush or just a stroke. He may shun your very touch, though jump onto your lap during cold winter nights. Who knows. All long-haired cats need a brush every one or two days, especially when they molt.
Take the time to get to know your animal. If you had him as a kitten, personality will emerge slowly as the kitten side wears off and he comes to know who loves him. Care for him well and he will be a loyal pet.
Sometimes, pets come to their owners from shelters. In this case, temperament will have developed as a result of two things. One is natural inclinations. The other is experience, perhaps harsh, though maybe just habits formed over time. Your new animal might actually be an older fellow by the time he comes to live at your house.
Little guys need to play. Give them string that will not catch their tiny claws. Offer balls to chase and chewing toys, plus a cat scratching and climbing post. For a while he will have a litter box, or this might become the norm if you live in a high rise or an area surrounded by cougars and coyotes. Otherwise, wean him off of the box and let him wander, explore, perhaps even through a cat door of his own. This will happen when he has come to associate home with safety and food. He must also be neutered and vaccinated first to protect him and other animals.
Food and drink should be kept simple, though not boring. Even pets can go off of their food when it is the same every day. Feed him just water most of the time, plus specially made cat milk as a nice treat. Give wet and dry food, either together or alternately, and not too much. He needs the moisture of wet and its flavor, plus the coarseness of dry to brush those sharp teeth.
