Dirtying Up the Community with Too Many Campaign Posters

I have about had it when it comes to elections and political campaigning. It’s not that I am passive or don’t care about politics, it is the way our communities are taken over with countless political signs. At almost every stop sign, intersection, and any place there is a flow of traffic, there are way too many signs placed there by all political factions supporting a favorite candidate. There are signs for all levels of government and even non-government positions from dog catcher to governor.

Not only are the roadsides cluttered with advertisements for candidates, billboards, television, and radio are inundated with hype on who is the best candidate for the job. Promises are made that won’t be kept or cannot be kept. Bashing and mudslinging are now filling our local airways and today I even heard of one on the National news, where foul language was used in disgust towards an incumbent in another state. In politics seems the gloves have been taken off and any avenue to secure the coveted vote or use persuasion tactics to secure a vote are not off limits.

It probably isn’t going to change and I heard of one candidate running for office here years ago was giving chickens for votes. His campaign slogan was, “Need a hen, vote for Ben” At a time when the economy was in the pits, a hen most likely won him several votes and maybe kept some families from going hungry, at least for a meal or two. With over 48 million people on food stamps as reported on Fox News today, this might be a factor in our time.I for one don’t think giving food stamps will solve any problems but only serve to create more.

The fact is I don’t read those signs and hang up the telephone if there is a political call showing on my caller ID. I abhor seeing our environment cluttered and violated with all those signs and wonder if all the money spent by candidates at all levels might be put to better use. It really annoys me also when after elections, campaign signs linger for months after the results are all tallied.
