On arriving at the Qin State, J presented to M gifts priced at a thousand ounces of gold. M, one of the King’s favourite officials, was in charge of the royal vehicles and horses. He put in a word to the King for J. “Your Majesty has frightened the King of the Yan State from resisting any more. He’s willing to be one of Your Majesty’s subjects as the other conquered States. He’d like to pay tribute as head of a prefecture and just keep his ancestral hall. He’s afraid to come here saying. Instead, he held a ceremony at court for sending envoys with boxed map of D and head of F to Your Majesty. He has put himself at Your Majesty’s disposal.” The King was overjoyed hearing this. Wearing his formal attire and arranging a grand ceremony, he received the envoys at the X Palace. J held the head box in his hands and Q the map one entering the Palace in turn. Ascending the steps, Q changed colour for fear. This greatly surprised the officials present. J turned to Q with a smile, and then made an excuse to the King.“He’s just a barbarian from the northern wilderness. He has never seen any great men like Your Majesty. So he’s frightened. I wish Your Majesty could forgive him and make him finish his mission.” The King called to J,“Bring me the map from Q.” J handed it to the King who unrolled it to its limits where the hidden dagger came in sight. So J grasped the King on the sleeve by his left hand and stabbed at him with the dagger in his right hand. The King was taken aback. He jumped to his feet and made his escape by tearing his sleeve apart. He pulled his sword but only grabbed its sheath for it’s too long. Moreover the sword was sucked fixedly in the sheath. In a rush it couldn’t be drawn out immediately. J ran after the King who fled around the columns. Shocked by the sudden occurrence, all the officials were at a loss. According to the Qin State law, no armed official was allowed in court. The armed royal guards were just stationed outside the Palace. They were banned from entering without call. In a flurry, the King had no time to summon the guards. Hence he was chased by J. In his awkwardness, he fought J with nothing but his own bare hands. At the moment, the court doctor, X, struck J with his medical bag in hand. Without any better ways, the King was still flying around the columns when he was hinted,“Your Majesty pushes the sword across the back and pulls it backhandedly .”He did as told with success. Now he made a counter-attack on J cutting off his left thigh. Handicapped, J shot his dagger at the King. But it missed its mark and stuck in the copper column. The King came back striking J further until eight wounds left. Hopelessly, leaning on the column with a laugh and sitting with his legs stretching apart like a dustpan, he cursed ,“I wouldn’t fail if it hadn’t been for capturing you alive and making you sign a peace treaty to answer the Prince.”The King’s subordinates came over and killed J. The King felt depressed for quite some time. Then decisions were made on awards and punishment for officials and criminals. X was rewarded two hundred ounces of gold. The King said,“X struck J with his medical bag because he is loyal to me.”
